Samsung Galaxy A26 5G Review: Full Specs, Release Date, Price, and the $299 Phone That Makes No Sense

Last updated: October 2026 · Category: Phone Reviews · 14 min read

I used the Samsung Galaxy A26 5G (6 GB / 128 GB, Awesome Mint) as my daily driver for three weeks. It ran Android 15 with One UI 7, updated through the September 2026 security patch. Benchmark data sourced from PhoneArena and GSMArena’s standardized testing. Battery tests ran at 200 nits, 50% volume, Wi-Fi on.

⭐ Our Rating7.0 / 10 — Good phone, terrible timing

I picked up the Galaxy A26 5G expecting to like it. On paper, it has everything I recommend in a budget phone: a 120 Hz Super AMOLED display, IP67 water resistance, a 50 MP main camera with OIS, and six years of software updates. At $299, that sounds like a steal.

Then I used it for three weeks. And I kept asking myself the same question: why does this phone exist?

The Galaxy A36 5G costs the exact same $299. It has a faster Snapdragon chip, a brighter display, and 45 W charging. The Galaxy A17 5G costs $200 and gets the same six years of updates. The Pixel 8a drops to $339 refurbished and has a dramatically better camera.

The A26 isn’t a bad phone. It’s just a phone with nowhere to stand. And in 2026, that’s a problem.

📅 Release Date & Price

Samsung announced the Galaxy A26 5G on March 1, 2025, at MWC Barcelona, and it went on sale in the US and Europe on March 28, 2025.

Pricing at launch:

ModelUS PriceEU Price
6 GB / 128 GB$299€299
8 GB / 256 GB—€369

In 2026, the A26 has dropped significantly. Amazon lists it for as low as $249. Best Buy and Walmart regularly run it between $249 and $279. The 8 GB / 256 GB model is harder to find in the US — Samsung only sells the 6 GB / 128 GB variant stateside.

Here’s the uncomfortable part: the Galaxy A36 5G launched at the same $299. And on sale, it drops to $249 too. So you’re paying the same price for a phone with a slower chip and a dimmer display.

🎨 Design & Display

The A26 looks better than it has any right to. Samsung gave it Gorilla Glass Victus+ on both the front and back — the same glass on the Galaxy S24 Ultra — plus a plastic frame that feels tighter than it should. At 7.7 mm thick and 200 g, it’s slim enough to slide into a pocket and heavy enough to feel substantial.

The “Awesome Mint” colorway I tested has a soft, glossy finish that doesn’t pick up fingerprints as badly as I expected. TechAdvisor noted the same thing: “It feels well-built and impressively premium.” I agree — this is a $299 phone that looks like it costs $150 more.

The IP67 rating is a genuine plus. It means the phone survives a dunk in 1 meter of fresh water for 30 minutes. The Galaxy A16 5G is only IP54. The Galaxy A17 5G is IP68. The A26 sits comfortably in the middle.

But there’s a catch: no headphone jack. Samsung removed it from the A25, and it’s not coming back. If you use wired headphones, that’s a dealbreaker. The A17 5G still has one.

The display is good — but not great

The 6.7-inch Super AMOLED panel runs at 120 Hz. Colors are vibrant. Blacks are true black. Scrolling is smooth. On paper, this is exactly what you want from a budget phone.

In practice, it’s dimmer than I’d like. PhoneArena measured 1,083 nits at 20% APL (bright max), which is technically decent. But TechAdvisor’s reviewer was less impressed: “Colours on the A26’s screen appear muted, and viewing angles are fairly narrow. Whites have a greyish tone, and blacks quickly become washed out in dim lighting.” That matches my experience. The A36’s panel hits higher brightness, and the Galaxy A56 hits 1,900 nits. The A26 is the dimmest of the three.

There’s also PWM flickering at low brightness. If you’re sensitive to flicker and get eye strain from OLED screens, test this one in person before buying. Notebookcheck flagged it as a con.

What 1,083 Nits Actually Means

Brightness measurements are usually taken at 20% APL (Average Picture Level) — meaning only 20% of the screen is white. Real-world brightness is lower when you’re reading text on a white background, because more of the screen is lit. In direct sunlight, the A26 is readable but not comfortable. The A36 and A56 are noticeably better outdoors.

🚀 Performance

This is where the A26 falls apart. The Exynos 1380 is a 5 nm chip from 2023, and in 2026 it feels every bit of its age.

For light use — texting, browsing, YouTube, Spotify — it’s acceptable. Apps open in reasonable time. Scrolling is smooth at 120 Hz. I never hit random stutters during basic use.

Push it, and the cracks show fast. TechAdvisor was blunt: “as soon as you want to open multiple apps, load image-heavy websites, or switch between a few tasks, the smartphone begins to lag, and noticeably so. App load times become much slower, scrolling can stutter, and even opening the camera sometimes takes a second too long.”

Gaming is worse. “Casual titles such as Subway Surfers run okay, but anything more demanding, like Call of Duty: Mobile or PUBG Mobile, struggles with frame drops and long load times, even on the lowest settings.”

Real-world findings

  • Light use: acceptable. The 120 Hz screen helps.
  • Multitasking: the 6 GB model struggles. Apps reload constantly.
  • Gaming: casual titles only. Demanding games are unplayable.
  • Sustained load: the phone gets warm but doesn’t throttle aggressively. Notebookcheck noted “low waste heat” as a positive.

👉 If you game or multitask heavily, this isn’t the phone for you. The Galaxy A36 has the same price and a better chip. Buy that instead.

📷 Camera

The 50 MP main camera with OIS is the only camera on this phone that matters. In daylight, it produces sharp, well-exposed photos with accurate color. PhoneArena’s camera test gave it a photo score of 127 — the same as the Galaxy A36. That’s genuinely good for $299.

The 8 MP ultrawide is mediocre. PhoneArena noted “there’s some loss of detail, and colors seem a bit washed out.” The 2 MP macro is pointless — PhoneArena called it “completely pointless” and TechAdvisor said “I never found myself wanting to use the camera intentionally beyond testing it out.”

Low light is where the A26 falls behind. TechAdvisor: “The cameras struggle outside of perfect lighting.” PhoneArena’s video score was 117, which is decent but not great. 4K at 30 fps is supported, but there’s no 60 fps option.

ConditionResult
Bright daylightGood — sharp, natural color, OIS helps
Overcast / shadeAcceptable — slight loss of detail
Indoor lightingWeak — noise reduction softens texture
Low light / nightPoor — OIS helps, but Night mode adds smearing
Selfie (13 MP)Good in daylight, soft indoors
Video4K @ 30 fps. No 60 fps option. Gyro-EIS is mediocre.

The camera is fine for social media. It’s not fine for anything more than that. If photography matters to you, the Pixel 8a refurbished at $339 is a dramatically better choice.

🔋 Battery & Charging

Battery life is the A26’s quiet strength. The 5,000 mAh cell paired with a relatively efficient chip delivers solid endurance. PhoneArena measured 11 hours and 14 minutes of web browsing, 9 hours and 19 minutes of video, and 5 hours and 9 minutes of gaming.

TestResult
Battery Life Estimate (PhoneArena)5h 21min
Web Browsing11h 14min
Video Streaming9h 19min
Gaming (3D)5h 9min
0 → 47% charge (30 min)~30 minutes
Full charge time (25 W)~1h 29min

Battery results sourced from PhoneArena’s standardized testing.

In my own testing, I averaged 8 to 9 hours of screen-on time with mixed use. On light days, I ended with 55–60% remaining. Two days of use is realistic for light users.

Charging is slow. 25 W gets you to 47% in 30 minutes and takes about 90 minutes to full. That’s on the slow side of acceptable in 2026. The Galaxy A36 supports 45 W charging. The OnePlus Nord N30 supports 50 W. And there’s no charger in the box.

🤖 Software & Updates

This is the A26’s strongest feature. Samsung guarantees six major OS upgrades and six years of security patches — through Android 21 and into 2031. At this price, only the Galaxy A17 5G offers the same commitment.

  • 6 major OS upgrades — through Android 21
  • 6 years of security patches — through 2031
  • Quarterly security updates

One UI 7 on the A26 is clean and light. TechAdvisor noted: “Bloatware is also relatively limited. You do get the Samsung basics like Galaxy Store, Notes, and SmartThings, alongside Google’s default apps, but no third-party apps like Booking.com.” That’s genuinely rare at this price.

Awesome Intelligence — Samsung’s trimmed-down Galaxy AI suite — is here. Circle to Search, Object Eraser, and Filters all work. PhoneArena noted these are “the core AI features” and “the most affordable way to dip your toes in Samsung’s AI algorithms.” They’re useful, but not transformative.

No Galaxy AI features like Live Translate or Generative Edit. The Exynos 1380 can’t handle them. That’s fine — most people won’t miss them.

🆚 How It Compares

💡 WekyTech Tip
If you find the Galaxy A26 on sale for under $220, it becomes a much easier recommendation. At $299, it’s competing with the Galaxy A36 — which has a faster chip, a brighter display, and stereo speakers. Set a price alert. If it doesn’t drop below $250, buy the A36 instead. Also: if you’re in the US, Samsung only sells the 6 GB / 128 GB model. The 8 GB / 256 GB version is available in Europe but not stateside.

❓ FAQ — Samsung Galaxy A26 5G

Is the Samsung Galaxy A26 5G worth buying in 2026?

Only if you find it on sale for under $250. At its $299 MSRP, the Galaxy A36 5G costs the same and offers a faster Snapdragon chip, a brighter display, and 45 W charging. The A26 isn’t bad — it’s just outclassed by its own sibling.

How much does the Galaxy A26 5G cost?

MSRP is $299 for the 6 GB / 128 GB model and €369 for the 8 GB / 256 GB model (not sold in the US). In 2026, it regularly drops to $249 on Amazon and Best Buy.

When was the Galaxy A26 5G released?

Samsung announced it on March 1, 2025, at MWC Barcelona, and it went on sale March 28, 2025.

Does the Galaxy A26 5G have a headphone jack?

No. Samsung removed it from the A25, and it’s not coming back. If you need a headphone jack, look at the Galaxy A17 5G instead.

Is the Galaxy A26 5G good for gaming?

No. TechAdvisor found that “casual titles such as Subway Surfers run okay, but anything more demanding, like Call of Duty: Mobile or PUBG Mobile, struggles with frame drops and long load times, even on the lowest settings.” For gaming, look at the Poco X6 Pro or CMF Phone 2 Pro instead.

How many Android updates will the Galaxy A26 5G get?

Six major OS upgrades and six years of security patches — through Android 21 and into 2031. It launched with Android 15 and is now running One UI 7.

Is there a charger in the box?

No. You’ll need a 25 W USB-C PD charger, sold separately. TechAdvisor confirmed the UK box only includes a USB-C cable.

Galaxy A26 5G vs Galaxy A36 5G — which should I buy?

The Galaxy A36 5G. It has a faster Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chip, a brighter display, 45 W charging, and stereo speakers — all for the same $299. The A26 only makes sense if you find it significantly cheaper.

Final Thoughts

The Galaxy A26 5G is a phone that does almost everything right. The display is smooth. The build quality is genuinely premium. The camera takes good photos in daylight. And six years of updates at $299 is exceptional.

But it’s competing with its own sibling. The Galaxy A36 5G costs the same, has a faster chip, a brighter display, and faster charging. There is no scenario where the A26 is the better choice at full price.

If you find it on sale for under $220, buy it. At that price, the trade-offs make sense. At $299, walk into the store, look at the A36 on the shelf next to it, and buy that instead.

Buy it if: you find it on sale for under $250, and you want a Samsung phone with a great display and six years of updates.
Skip it if: you’re paying full price, you game, or you can stretch to the Galaxy A36 or a refurbished Pixel 8a.
