Xiaomi 15 Ultra Review: Full Specs, Release Date, Price, and the Camera That Ruined My Mirrorless

Last updated: October 2026 · Category: Phone Reviews · 15 min read

I used the Xiaomi 15 Ultra (16 GB / 512 GB, Silver Chrome) as my daily driver for three weeks. It ran Android 15 with HyperOS 2, updated through the September 2026 security patch. Benchmark data sourced from GSMArena and Notebookcheck’s standardized testing. Battery tests ran at 200 nits, 50% volume, Wi-Fi on.

⭐ Our Rating9.0 / 10 — The best camera phone you can buy

I bought a dedicated mirrorless camera in 2023. Two lenses, a bag, the whole setup. I used it for exactly one vacation before it started collecting dust.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is why.

Three weeks with it. Three hundred photos. Not once did I wish I’d brought the mirrorless. The 1-inch sensor catches light that shouldn’t exist. The 200 MP periscope turns a bird on a wire 50 feet away into a portrait. And Leica’s color science gives everything a warmth that I’ve been chasing in Lightroom for years.

But it’s not perfect. It’s heavy. The software has quirks. And if you live in the US, you can’t even buy it officially.

Here’s the honest breakdown.

⚡ Quick Verdict — 30 Second Summary

👍 What I Liked

📅 Release Date & Price

Xiaomi announced the 15 Ultra on February 27, 2025, at MWC Barcelona. It went on sale globally on March 2, 2025.

In Europe, it starts at €1,499 for the 16 GB / 512 GB model. In the UK, it’s £1,299. It is not officially sold in the US or Canada.

⚠️ US buyers, read this: Like most Xiaomi flagships, the 15 Ultra doesn’t support US mmWave 5G, and carrier support is limited to T-Mobile and its MVNOs. If you import it, you’re on your own for warranty support.

🎨 Design & Display

This phone is a brick.

226 grams. 9.4 millimeters thick. The camera bump is so massive it makes the phone wobble like a seesaw on a table. If you’re coming from a Galaxy S26 Ultra, it will feel like you’re carrying a small brick in your pocket.

But it’s a beautiful brick. The Silver Chrome model I tested has a two-tone design with a textured vegan leather back. It feels premium, resists fingerprints, and the IP68 rating means it survives a dunk in the pool.

And the display? Spectacular. 3,200 nits of peak brightness. That’s the brightest screen I’ve tested this year. I used it outdoors in direct afternoon sunlight and could read every word without squinting. The 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate keeps everything smooth without draining the battery.

🚀 Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is the fastest Android chip of 2025/2026. It’s the same chip powering the Galaxy S26 Ultra, and it flies here. With 16 GB of RAM, I never saw an app reload, even with 30 tabs open in Chrome.

Gaming is excellent. Genshin Impact runs at 60 fps on max settings without a dropped frame. The vapor chamber cooling system does its job — the phone gets warm, but never uncomfortably hot.

Geekbench 6 (Single)3,0103,648
Geekbench 6 (Multi)9,20010,898

Note: The Galaxy S26 Ultra uses the newer “Gen 5” version of the chip, which is why it scores higher. In daily use, you won’t notice the difference.

📷 Camera

This is the reason to buy the phone.

The main camera uses a 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor — the largest sensor you can get in a smartphone. It captures more light than any other phone, which means cleaner, sharper photos in low light.

The 200 MP periscope is the real star. It offers 4.3x optical zoom, but because of the massive resolution, it can crop in for a 10x or even 20x “optical-quality” shot that looks incredible. I shot a bird on a wire from 50 feet away and the feather detail was visible.

Leica’s color tuning gives photos a warm, film-like look that I absolutely love. If you prefer a more clinical look, switch to the Leica Authentic profile. Video is excellent too — 8K at 30fps, 4K at 120fps.

🔋 Battery & Charging

Here’s where I have to be honest about the global model. The Chinese version has a 6,000 mAh battery. The global version? 5,410 mAh. Xiaomi shaved off 590 mAh for markets outside China.

That sounds bad on paper. In practice? I still got 8 to 9 hours of screen-on time. Two days of use is realistic for most people. The 90 W wired charger gets you from 0 to 100% in about 35 minutes, and 80 W wireless is faster than most phones’ wired charging.

⚠️ The battery downgrade is real, but it doesn’t ruin the experience. Xiaomi’s software optimization is good enough that 5,410 mAh goes further than you’d expect. Just know that the spec sheet doesn’t match the Chinese model.

🤖 Software & Updates

HyperOS 2 is fast and fluid. But it’s not for everyone.

Xiaomi still includes some redundant apps, and there are occasional ads in the system’s built-in apps (like the file manager or browser) that you have to disable manually. It takes about 10 minutes of setup to get it clean. I’ve done it before and it’s annoying every time.

Xiaomi promises 4 major OS updates and 6 years of security patches. That’s good, but it’s still behind Samsung and Google’s 7-year promises.

🔀 Should You Buy It?

  • Do you live outside the US?
    • YES → Do you care about camera quality above everything else?
      • YES → Buy the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Nothing else comes close.
      • NO → Do you want a cleaner software experience?
        • YES → Look at the Galaxy S26 Ultra or Pixel 10 Pro.
        • NO → The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is still an incredible phone.
    • NO (you live in the US) → Don’t import it. Buy a Galaxy S26 Ultra instead.

Final Thoughts

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is the best camera phone on the market. It’s not a phone for everyone — it’s heavy, expensive, and the software isn’t for everyone. But if you want the absolute best photos and you live in a market where it’s sold, nothing else comes close.

Buy it if: you want the best camera on any phone and don’t mind the heavy software.

Skip it if: you live in the US, want a lighter phone, or prefer cleaner software.
